Over the Hills and Through the Woods...

...I went snappin' photos!  This statue in my neighbor's yard usually holds a bouquet of flowers...not on this cold, wintry day.
Who doesn't love a magnolia tree?  It is quintessentially 'southern'....not on this snowy day.
Where do the birds go when it rains or snows?  I miss seeing all the pretty birds and hearing them sing!
My neighbor's lamp posts are just begging to be undressed from the Christmas festivities!
Even the toys seem to beg to be played with on a chilly, snowy day!
We are not used to this type of weather in South Carolina!  My husband brought home this old sled from his parent's house just the day before the snow fell!  The usual form of sledding has been with a garbage lid or a lid from the Christmas decoration containers!  I am sure not to lose a sock monkey, a zebra or
Polar bear in this white out (all hats courtesy of Grandma!)

We call it 'Sledding...Southern Style!"  Okay, so some might call it redneck style!  Either way, we had a ball playing in the new found winter wonderland!  So many new things to do and see!
A garbage lid works just fine!
There isn't anywhere to sled right around our house, so "we walked for miles in the snow over the hills to the school house!"  That's a bit of an exaggeration, but it sounded just like something my Granny would have said (and it would have been true!)  I realized after our little trek up the road to go sledding that my kids need to toughen up a bit!
Toby was in his element!  He grew up in the snowy parts of Pennsylvania.  We are glad he felt right at home!

My husband gave me a new camera for Christmas and I haven't had a chance to play around with it!  The beautiful snow seemed like the perfect chance to test it out!  I don't have a clue what I am doing, but love looking around for odd objects to snap and certainly my children stand in as models!  I am scouring the blogs for great photo tips.  Please share any tips or blogs with tips on photography!

After one day of the beautiful snow, I am longing for spring!  It is nothing but ice today, so we are cleaning out toys, toys, and more toys and clothes!  Children grow too fast!

My Burden-Bearer

Do you ever feel like this donkey?  This sure does make me laugh!
Or how about this woman?  I am not only amazed at the load she is carrying, but the fact that she is carrying it across a rickety bridge in flip flops!  I imagine that she does this everyday without grumbling or complaining.

I looked up these pictures on bing, not because I feel like the donkey or this woman, but because I am ashamed that I complain when I have a small load of troubles and find myself grumbling!
Over the holidays, there were many unexpected events that were out of anyone's control.  The problem is not the fact that we were sick or the unforeseen circumstances, but more the fact that I grumbled, because my Christmas wasn't as I had planned.
I have a small devotion book called, Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.  The first few devotions for 2011 have been about being thankful always and finding rest and peace in Him.  How often I am looking for peace in my circumstances and when the circumstances fail, I grumble!  I need to seek my peace and rest in Him.  I need to have a heart of gratitude always to the One who provides so many blessings!

Do not be weighed down with problems and unresolved issues, for I am your burden-bearer.  In the world you have trials and distress, but don't let them get you down.  I have conquered the world...
        ~Jesus Calling

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world."
 ~John 16:33

I pray that you and I will be able to look past our circumstances, good or bad, and see the face of Christ.

Note: This is a great little devotion book, if you are looking for one to start the New Year!  Even if you don't know Jesus Christ, (as I didn't for 20 years of my life!) this little book speaks such truth and will meet you right where you are!  I encourage you to look up the scriptures that Ms. Young provides at the bottom of each devotion.

Gift Ideas

Each year, after Christmas, I make a plan for the following Christmas.  I am not much of a planner, but I crave a simpler time for my family, and I have found that planning helps tremendously!
After I found Yvonne at Stone Gable's Granola, I decided to start collecting pretty china and silver baby cups for the containers to give as Christmas gifts.  I am not the baker, but this is easy for me and is so yummy for Christmas morning!  I bought my glass containers at Wal-Mart, but you can get them at Target or Hobby Lobby, too.  I collected pretty china cups from TJMaxx and silver baby cups from antique flea markets.  Washed right up and they are perfect for scoops!
I added some festive kitchen towels and a little tag to give suggestions of 'add-ins' for the granola...it is great as a snack with mini chocolate chips or for breakfast with fruit and yogurt.  Click here for Yvonne's recipe; however, I do add the coconut and omit the wheat germ (just couldn't find it!) Her granola is a staple at our home!

Collect pretty containers throughout the year (see earlier post here) and make your own arrangements as gifts for neighbors and friends.  I purchased the water picks for the roses at Hobby Lobby.  I put some green foam in the bottom of the container to hold the greenery in place.  Gather your favorite greenery from outside, add some pretty roses and arrange however you like!

My friend has a lovely garden and made these preserves and homemade bread.  I think the cinnamon roll recipe is from The Pioneer Woman, and I can tell you that they are to die for!  I told her I wanted these if I was on my death bed and could only have one last thing to eat!  I must say this basket of goodies saved us this Christmas...everyone with the flu!  With the hustle of Christmas, this is an ideal gift to help during those hectic holiday meal times!

This is a super fun gift!  The tag to the right reads, "Christmas Break Science Experiments for those "I am bored" moments...Each tag gives a different experiment using household items.  My friend included all of these items in the bucket.  Here is one example:

Rocket Cola
Supplies: 2 Liter Diet Coke, 4 Mentos
1. Place the 2 Liter bottle of Diet Coke on a flat surface and in a secure place outside.
2.  Remove the lid from the bottle of diet coke.
3.  Remove 4 Mentos and drop all four at once into the bottle of diet coke as quickly as possible and jump back out of the way of the shooting rocket!

We had a lot of fun with this, and I know we will do these again in the summer!
I loved this apple pie with the lovely verse written on the box.  The little apple ornament was attached and is just so sweet!  Maybe you have a special apple pie or turnover recipe.  Attach this verse and you have a great gift!

Some things to consider when planning your gifts for next year:

*It really is the thought from the heart that counts!

*Don't stress out or stress your bank account...that misses the true meaning of Christmas!  I used to stress trying to bake...now, I just don't bake!  Use other talents to make things if baking is not your gift!

*If you do love to bake, consider baking items that can help with a meal for the family...bread, rolls, breakfast oatmeal, etc.  It is a crazy time of year, so this would help eliminate some stress around meals!

*Plan early so you can look for items through the year.  You will be glad when Christmas rolls around and you already have your gifts for family and friends.  And, you will be glad that you spaced your money for Christmas throughout the year!

*Consider gifts that build 'family' time.  Fill a jar with fun questions for the family to ask each other.  This builds relationships and causes laughter!  I love to do these kinds of things with my children.  Their answers always surprise me!
Example: If you could make a movie, what would it be about?
What is something interesting you learned today?

*My last tip would be to print a calendar of the month of December and write down all the activities, events and parties you attended, while it is fresh in your mind.  Pull this out next Christmas and you will be better able to plan your holiday!  Decide what you will attend and what you can cut out.  I have already printed mine! Our goal for next year is to cut down the time we are away from the children and to establish better boundaries, so we can have good quality time with our kids!

What great gifts did you receive or share with your loved ones and what great tips do you have for making life simple during the holidays?

A Look Back...

This was a fun look back at my top posts!  It is interesting to me to see what sparked your interest!

The Comforts of a Kitchen had the most views for this past year at Three Pixie Lane!

For the room that I like to visit the least, my Laundry Room garnered the second most visits.

A Swedish Christmas had the third most views for the year.

Crazy About a Porch was the fourth most visited post.
And the fifth most visited post was A Swedish Intent!

Dining Out...Outside was the post that received the most comments and was one of my favorites, because it was outside!  How I long for those days again!

A Vacation at Home is probably my favorite from 2010, because it was such a relaxing day!

This shot of our playroom is the most clicked on picture at Houzz.com.
The Laundry Room was also popular at Houzz.com and was my second most popular 'ideabook' picture!
This picture of our remodeled porch was the third most clicked on picture at Houzz.com!  If you haven't scoured their site for ideas, you should head on over...there is so much to look at, but perfect for redecorating or remodeling ideas!

Thanks to all of you who visited Three Pixie Lane in 2010 and left such kind comments!  Your words have meant the world to me and have been such an encouragement!

Welcome 2011!

Talented Friends and Favorite Things...

This is my favorite room!  My friend Elizabeth knows how to decorate so well with color!  I L.O.V.E the red and white check curtains and chairs!  Can I just curl up and live in this room?!
All of her vignettes are festive and every space is decorated for the holiday with bright colors and fun polka dots (see the candles!)  Sshhhh....I went sneaking around snapping photos, while she read a book to the kids!
Elizabeth replaced her everyday china with this Christmas china.  A nativity scene recently given to her by a family friend sits on top of the hutch.  This is very clever and so pretty!
I love how she used her moss covered bunny as a part of the Christmas decor, too!
Can you soak in all the details?  All of her rooms are like this!  Just bright and cheery and oh, so lovely and festive!

This wreath is another favorite!  My friend Jennifer is so talented...just about anything she touches turns to gold and the food she cooks...just out of this world!  She keeps a family blog, but I am trying to get her to start a food/craft/decorating/gardening blog...she has such talent!  She whipped this wreath up in no time and I just love it!  I am drawn to it because of the wonderful colors!  I want one, Jen!
My newest friend Monica made this sign.  I love the verse and the distressed look!  She has done one incredible job of finding and refurbishing furniture for her home!  With four kids, I don't know how she does it, but she pulls off some amazing projects!  I credit her for introducing me to blogging and for teaching me some great tips about photography.  She keeps a family blog, too, and I hope she will start up a craft/photography/decorating/refurbishing blog soon!
Can you see the oversized 'M' on the wall?  The picture below is a bit brighter!  Katie is a master at creating the most beautiful vignettes.  She has an incredible eye for all things vintage.  She painted this monogram on her kitchen wall freehand!  I have learned a good bit about decorating and the placement of things from Katie!
If my friends are seeing this, I hope you don't mind that I posted!  These were such great ideas, so I wanted to share with my friends in blog land!  Much love!!

Marshmallows, White Candy Canes, Quilts and Lambs

Many of you asked these questions and while you may be done with Christmas, here is the scoop!
~
Marshmallows with heart...
I had big plans of making the marshmallows from scratch, so that they would be big enough to hold the heart template.  While at Wal-Mart, we found the 'big roasters' and these worked perfectly...saving me from the big effort of baking (which I don't love!)
We punched out the heart with a heart puncher (Martha Stewart from Michael's) and placed the template over the marshmallow.  I brushed a small amount of water on the marshmallow so that the sugar would adhere.  We sprinkled red sugar on some and cocoa on others.  These are fun to make with kids and just a little something extra when sipping a cup of hot cocoa!  These would be fun to make for Valentine's!

White candy canes...
The white candy canes came in a package from Target.  It was a mix of solid red, solid green and the white.  I noticed that they were on clearance after Christmas, so you might still be able to snag some for next year!  Target usually carries them every year.  Also, did you know the very first candy cane confections were all white and not the typical red and white stripes that we see today?!  We just discovered that!

Quilts...
Many of the quilts you see around my house came from outlets.  I have never spent full price on a quilt.  They can be very expensive!  Favorite places to look for quilts are Pottery Barn Outlet, Ralph Lauren Outlet, TJMaxx, and Homegoods.  I found three Ralph Lauren quilts on clearance at TJMaxx.  I bought all three and gave two as Christmas gifts.  The original price for the queen size quilt was $370.  I spent $50.  RL makes a very good quality quilt, so this was a bargain!  Quilts just exude comfort and there are always fun patterns to make a space feel cozy!

Lambs...
Many of you have asked where I found the lambs I used at Christmas....flea markets and various shops.  I just glanced at etsy to give you some more ideas; however, I didn't spend over $25 for any of my lambs.  Lambs will start to pop up around Easter, so keep a look out!  Last year, while researching the meaning of Easter, I decided to start a small collection of lambs.  I have tons of bunnies and I love bunnies, but I couldn't explain the 'bunny' effectively to my children and how he came to symbolize Easter.  The lamb is so appropriate and just as cute as the bunny!

Thanks for your inquiries and I apologize for the late response!
Happy New Year!

A Christmas to Remember

Happy New Year!  I had such big plans to sit and visit all the wonderful blogs during my holiday break and to wish so many of you a Merry Christmas!  After we ushered our last guests out the door, we ushered in the flu!  Unfortunately, when sickness hits, we all grow a few horns!  I have joked many times that the devil ushered himself in, pitched a tent, rolled out his sleeping bag and decided to stay for a while...anyone with me?  Does that ever happen?  Add to that a big heaping of selfishness mixed with the flu and it makes for a bad combination!  Oh, but it is no surprise that the devil himself would try to upstage Christmas!
So, in my effort to remember the 'good' of Christmas 2010, here are some of the more memorable highlights!
I hope your Christmas was wonderful and peaceful!
December 25, 2010 saw a white Christmas here in our little town and this was a first since 1947!
My daughters and I attended an American Girl Fashion Show in early December.
Silent Night...not tonight!  We went caroling with our friends....a favorite of mine every year!
Here is my friend's daughter enjoying a candy cane...does it get any sweeter than this?
One of my friends hosts a gingerbread decorating party each year for the children...another highlight and favorite!
The girls take a break from icing to pose!
A little game of 'pick-up' football is good for the boys who were tired of decorating their gingerbread houses.
The lights at McAdenville, NC made for a fun night out with family and friends.

The Billy Graham Library was a great Christmas experience and a first for us...live nativity with real camels and sheep, Christmas carolers, and hot chocolate!  Carriage rides were available but the line was too long!
Watching my seven year old son still play with his Thomas trains warmed my heart...I pulled them out to hang as ornaments on a tree in his room, but they never made it there!
Time with old family friends... (before we all got sick!)
Our live nativity...the part of baby Jesus is played by my niece Norah!
We are down to two Wise men...by this point my son felt terrible.  My daughters hold their gold and myrrh for the baby Jesus.  We made the felt crowns earlier in the month in preparation for our skit!
I had decided not to buy new pajamas for the kids this year, in an effort to stick to our budget, when my sweet neighbor showed up on Christmas Eve with these precious gowns for the girls!
On Christmas morning, the children wait for dad to get the video camera before seeing Santa's surprises!
Dosed up with Tamiflu, I drove my daughter to Atlanta for a one-night visit to the American Girl Store...a present from Santa!  She is nine and I love that she still plays with her dolls!  The hotel even gave her a free bed for her doll with an outfit and goody bag...what a treat!

School started yesterday and we fell back into our routine.  The horns have disappeared and we are cleaning house!  I am excited about the New Year!
~
Blessings to you in 2011!
