The Angel Oak Tree is one of the oldest trees in North America. It stands along Bohicket Road of John's Island outside Charleston, South Carolina and is thought to be over 1500 years old. It is believed to have sprouted 1000 years before Columbus' arrival in the New World! While the tree is now protected in a park, it is free to see! From downtown Charleston, it is only about a 20 minute drive. We packed a picnic and enjoyed the shade on this hot summer day!

Have I told you how much I ADORE Charleston? We didn't see that tree, but saw other live oaks and I just LOVE them. We don't have those in the midwest.

Charleston is one of my favorite places to visit...I can't believe I never heard of this tree when I was there...maybe next time..I love the way these Live Oaks stretch their arms out low to the ground like this.

Wow!!!! Thanks for sharing this great photo! That is some tree!!!! I'd love to visit Charleston some time and see this. How unbelievable that this tree made it through so many years and probably so many storms and who knows what else.
