Dog Days of Summer

'Dog Days' is the name for the sultriest period of summer, from July 3 to Aug. 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius, the Dog Star and the sun.  In the Mediterranean region this period coincided with hot and humid days; hence, the 'dog days of summer!'  How will you spend your 'Dog Days?'

We are starting our 'Dog Days' with a little fishing!  When I realized she didn't have one, I made my youngest child a fishing pole from a piece of bamboo and a string with a small weight attached.  The other two are 'seasoned' fishermen!  Have a wonderful Independence Day!  For more pictures, see 'One Step at a Time.'

  2. I always wondered what the "dog days of summer" meant! Darling picture of your little fishermen. We are spending our dog days at our house in the wine country with kids and grandkids. Swimming, barbecuing, maybe floating the river! Happy 4th!
