A Harvest Display

I seemed to have skipped over Halloween.  There was nothing in me this year that yearned to pull out my spooky decor!  Maybe it is my constant struggle with the holiday or maybe I was just being lazy!  Either way, I did manage a few harvest displays.  I was inspired by a little journal that pictured a large galvanized tub full of hay, pumpkins, and corn.  The crow keeps falling over and it looks like I have a dead crow on my porch...so I guess to our visitors, that is pretty spooky!

As Thanksgiving approaches, I am searching ways to teach my children to count their blessings and to have a heart of gratitude.  What are some ways you celebrate Thanksgiving?  How do you show a heart of thankfulness?  Thanks for sharing your ideas with me, as I seek to teach my children!

Thanks for stopping by!

I will add the sites I link to through the week.  See my sidebar for link parties!

  1. I wish I had a gazillion ideas to share with you but I don't. Last year we made coffee filter leaves using waterproof markers and spraying water on them. We cut them into leaves and left them in a bucket on our table and at every meal we talked about what we were thankful for. Then we glued them to some branches in a galvanized vase. My oldest said napkins at one point and we put it on there. It was super fun the girls wanted to keep doing it throughout the year. Nothing new but still incredibly special!

  4. I always enjoy your posts! My kids are now in college but we have always put more emphasis on Thanksgiving than on Halloween. One activity that we have used many years involved 5 kernels of corn. We learned that during the first winter the Pilgrims were so low on food supplies they at one point they ended up with a ration of five kernels of corn per person each day. We gave each family member 5 kernels of popped corn each and had them name five things that they were most thankful for. Even as young adults, my children are still not into Halloween but they really look forward to Thanksgiving.

  5. I really love your harvest decor! It's simple and country and creative. The boots sitting out beside it add the nicest touch too.

  6. A lovely post. I stuggle with Halloween, too, at times, but I love the colors, the time of year and the pleasant memories of a safe and happy childhood. I also like the opportunity to be creative. I don't change or paint my furniture, so I enjoy the opporunity to decorate for a different look in my home.
For Thanksgiving, I have started reading a story about the Pilgrims (aloud to my family). It is a fairly simple story and it gives some information that doesn't always appear in most children's books. It makes these people and their struggles a bit more personal.

  7. I love the galvanized bucket full of harvest goodness. I don't tend to decorate for Halloween, I just seem to focus on fall in general and feel good if I can have that displayed by October 1st. I wanted to tell you how gorgeous those shots of your daughter turned out and yes, her sweet spirit shines through. Patty

  11. I am feeling very un-Halloween-ish this year, too. I have half-hearted (but fiddly to make) Halloween bunting in the living room and that's it. I might carve a pumpkin next week, I might not. I'm more ready for Christmas than anything.

  16. This is my kind of Fall display. I am no into spooky at all. I keep a old wooden red wagon by my front door, filled with gourds, hay bales, and pumpkins for my display. Along with my dried corn stalks, and some mums of course.

  21. I am SO right there with you. I love October - weather wise it's my favorite month of the year. I do not like Halloween anymore, though I used to as a child, and even did it with my children. Too bad my faith was not where it is today! Still, a friend reminded me that even October 31 is the day the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it! Though I don't want to participate, I will no longer hide out in the back of the house with the lights off.

Off my soap box! Your home is lovely - I just found you today, and I'm glad I did!

We definitely make the most out of Fall and have pumpkins coming out our ears! :-) I absolutely love your gorgeous Harvest display and think the crow is the perfect finishing touch.
